Sewer Crawler Traction: Fixing Slippage in Grease, Sludge and Slick Pipe

When the crawler spins, the inspection stalls. Traction loss is one of the most common — and most fixable — problems in pipeline inspection. Here is what works in which conditions.

01 · The Symptom: Crawler Won't Track

The crawler sits in the pipe spinning its wheels, or weaves and stalls mid-line. The drive is fine — the traction interface between wheel and pipe has failed. In collection systems, that interface is under constant attack from grease, sludge, slime and debris.

02 · The Conditions That Kill Traction

  • Grease: the traction killer in sanitary lines — a lubricating film on everything
  • Sludge and slime: wheels lose consistent contact
  • Debris fields: uneven surfaces, no consistent grip
  • Slick pipe: smooth-walled pipe with zero friction

03 · Traction Loss or Drive Fault? Diagnose First

Before assuming traction: traction loss happens at the surface — wheels spin regardless of pipe condition. Drive faults happen on every surface, including the workshop bench. Video diagnosis separates the two in minutes; see our crawler repair diagnostics.

04 · Fix One: Carbide-Gritted Crawler Wheels

The core upgrade for grease and slime: carbide grit bonded to the wheel surface gives the crawler teeth that bite through the film where standard wheels spin. For sanitary lines with chronic grease, this is the default answer.

05 · Fix Two: Crawler Tracks

Track systems spread traction across the pipe surface — grip in the heavy sludge and debris conditions that stop wheeled crawlers entirely. If wheels are consistently failing in your worst lines, tracks change what's inspectable.

06 · Fix Three: Traction Cleats

Added-grip cleats retrofit onto crawlers that need more bite without a full wheel or track conversion — the economical middle option.

08 · Compatibility: Stated Carefully

Traction products fit crawlers from multiple major manufacturers — but compatibility is a hardware fact, not an affiliation. Confirm your crawler make and model with us and the fit is verified before anything ships.

09 · Warranty Considerations

Traction upgrades can interact with crawler manufacturer warranties — confirm for your system before installing. We give you the straight answer for your specific crawler, not a guess.

10 · What We Carry

Tell Equipment is an authorized TruGrit Traction dealer — nationwide: carbide-gritted crawler wheels, crawler tracks, traction cleats and crawler accessories, specified against your actual pipe conditions.

11 · FAQ

Why does my sewer crawler slip?
Grease, sludge, slime and slick pipe destroy the friction between wheels and pipe surface. Traction upgrades — carbide wheels, tracks or cleats — restore grip.
Will traction wheels fit my crawler?
Compatibility is confirmed per crawler make, model and wheel configuration — tell us what you run and fit is verified before quoting. Fit is a hardware fact; it does not imply manufacturer affiliation.
Carbide wheels vs tracks?
Grease and slime usually answer carbide wheels; heavy sludge and debris often justify tracks; cleats add grip without a full conversion.
My crawler slips — traction or drive?
Traction loss happens at the wheel-pipe interface; drive faults happen on every surface. A video diagnosis often separates the two in minutes.
