Both machines dig with suction — the difference is what loosens the soil. Air, water, or both: the choice changes spoil, safety and the jobs you can take. Here is the decision framework.

01 · The Core Difference

Hydro excavation uses high-pressure water to break up soil before the vacuum lifts it. Air (vacuum) excavation uses compressed air to loosen soil — the vacuum then lifts dry spoil. Same suction, fundamentally different digging.

  • Hydro: frozen ground, hard clay, dense soil — water cuts what air cannot
  • Air: utility locating where soil must stay dry, backfill reuse, sites where water disposal is a problem
